My Favourite Contour Palettes

fullsizeoutput_61e

I will be the first one to admit that I cannot contour properly. You’ll always find me making fishy faces or staring at my Instagram feed trying to figure out how to perfectly contour. But what I will say is these 5 palettes have helped me big time. I know I’m SO late to the contouring game (but honestly, who FOLLOWS trends right? It’s all about making them) but here are 5 of my favourite contour palettes that work best for a novice like me!

  1. Sleek Makeup’s Cream Contour Kit in Medium: I picked this up at Ulta and I am in love with how simple and easy it is to use. It’s also the cheapest palette out of these and my wallet cannot be any happier!
  2. Urban Decay’s Shape Shifter in Medium Dark: This impulse buy ended up being one of my favourite UD purchases in a long time. This is perfect for travel because it has both cream and powder contour shades plus a gorgeous highlight shade!
  3. Kat Von D’s Shade+Light Palette: This is the holy grail of contour products. These powders feel like butter and blend perfectly on your skin. You can also use the lighter shades to bake!
  4. Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit in Medium to Tan: This was one of my first ever contour palettes I had ever purchased and I always go back to it. I love that it’s buildable and perfect for my skin tone!
  5. NARS Contour Blush in Paloma: This one is my favourite for everyday mainly because it’s super simple to use and it looks like I contoured without even trying (that’s how you’re supposed to rock this trend right? lolz).

Review: Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Quickie Contour Stick

DSC04360

So if you read my post last month, then you already know how excited I have been to try Benefit’s Hoola Quickie contour stick. Seriously, I am not by any means an expert at contouring. In fact, I still don’t understand how it works. I won’t lie though, I have tried it out at different events because of this very product but I’ve never really been able to master it…until I tried THIS product.

DSC04369

Benefit’s Hoola bronzer is a cult favourite. Anyone and everyone that knows anything about makeup has heard of that particular bronzer. When they decided to come out with a cream-stick version of it, I was beyond excited to try it. It’s a cream-to-powder formula which means that it goes on like a cream and it dries as a powder. Since it’s in a form of a stick, you just have to line the areas you’re trying to contour (hence the quickie part of the name) and blend either using your fingers, a brush or the Beauty Blender.

This soft matte bronzer has been one of my favourite products to try. I have to say when I tried this to contour my cheekbones, nose and jaw line…it worked like a charm. Never has a contour looked so natural in my life. It’s super bendable and the packaging is super cute. There’s no fragrance to it and I loved how easy it was to use. You can definitely build up the formula and layer with other products, if you’re looking to look super sculpted.

However, there is ONE slight issue. In a world where there are tons of different skin tones, I can’t see this working for my dolls that have a darker skin tone. In fact, it doesn’t really show up A LOT on my skin, unless I layer or build. But I like to use this for a natural looking contour, so it works out in my case. Although, I will mention…when I wanted to see if this can give me that Kardashian look, I found I was using a lot more product than any of my other bronzer/contour powder.

With everything being said, I do think this is a really good product Benefit has put out. Those who love the original boxed powders are going to absolutely love this because it’s easy to use, looks very natural and it’s very easy to build. Plus, it looks SO cute on your makeup counter. This product retails for $38 (CDN) at any Benefit counter!

Pros:

  • Cream stick dries to a powder
  • Doesn’t irritate skin
  • Soft Matte bronzer/contour, doesn’t look shiny
  • Buildable and blends really easy

Cons:

  • Shade might be a little to light for darker skin tones
  • You do end up using a lot of product if you have mid range skin tone

Rating: 8.5/10

First Impressions

If you’ve been an avid reader of this blog, then you’re already aware of the fact that Kat Von D makes some seriously amazing beauty products (hello, this one’s my all time fav). So, it was only natural that I would want to try this beauty line’s contour palette…especially, given that contouring is and always will be a beauty trend no matter what (thank you Kardashians). When I first saw this palette and swatched it, I fell in love with the fact that both the “shades” and “lights” were matte. The “shades” are the equivalent to the darker contour shades and the “lights” are the matte highlight shades (ain’t that cute?). Also, I love that she includes a How-to-guide in this packaging for newbies like me (bonus). Overall, I was very very VERY impressed when I first saw and tried this product. The names of these shades are pretty Kat Von D like (if you’re familiar with her products). One of my favourite things I noticed was the fact that all the colours in here were natural looking.

Product Application & Formula

fullsizeoutput_1b

The formula has to be one of the best I have ever used, especially for a powder. Seriously, it feels smooth and it’s super easy to blend. You can use a Beauty Blender or a brush and this looks flawless on your skin. One of the biggest pros of this product is the fact that it’s universally flattering for all skin tones. In fact, all the colours included in this palette will work with any skin tone because they’re natural looking shades (depending when the light hits you where). It’s easy to use and I found that I could combine the shades together without it looking cakey on my skin (woohoo). Theyre super buildable and it doesn’t irritate your skin! The best part about this product is that you don’t need a lot of it and it swatches incredibly well (scroll below). Every single shade is extremely opaque and gorgeous!  Along with being the perfect formula, the packaging is also nice. It’s got a ginormous mirror and the size is not super big, so you can travel with it.

Final Verdict

This has to be one of my most used contour palettes ever. It’s easy to use. It looks extremely natural and never cakey. It’s worth every single dime and I’m convinced that I will be repurchasing this product once I hit pan! The palette isn’t intimidating at all for newbies. You can use and combine these shades to get the perfect contour!

Beauty Diaries: My Favourite MAC Products

 IMG_4724

So if you don’t know this already, now you will: I am a certified MAC cosmetics addict! This was one of the first beauty brands I had ever used, when I got into makeup and I’ve continued to use their products until now. Although, they have their hits and misses, there are a few staple products from this brand that I cannot live without. Here’s a list of the products that are absolute must-haves:

IMG_4723MAC Penultimate Eye Liner Rapidblack

This is one of the best liquid eye liners I have ever used! The colour is opaque and the best thing about this product is the fact that it’s simple and easy to use. It’s designed like a marker with a felt tip that’s super easy to control. It takes me less than 20 seconds to line my eyes with this liner and I use it everyday!

IMG_4720IMG_4721  MAC Studio Fix Foundation (NC43)

I know that a lot of people have a love/hate relationship with this product. I’ve had nothing but good experiences with this powder foundation. Since I have combination oily skin, this product keeps my shine at bay while giving me great coverage. This is one foundation I always end up using because it works great with my skin!

IMG_4715MAC Lipstick in Bombshell

This has to be one of the most unique pink coloured lipstick I have ever used or owned. It has a very nice gold sheen to it, which is what I think makes this product unique. The formula, as always, is great on my lips and I find that I reach for this particular lipstick whenever I am in doubt about what lip colour to use. I find it goes with any makeup look!

IMG_4713IMG_4714

MAC Mineralize SkinFinish Natural (Medium Deep)

If you must only purchase one product from MAC, then this has to be it! This is one of the best light coverage foundations I have ever used. I use this to set my liquid foundations as well as I wear this on top of BB creams. Since it’s light coverage, it’s not cakey and it sets everything perfectly. Plus, as the name says, it looks super natural and just blends with your skin!

IMG_4718MAC Eyeshadow in Shroom

I love this eyeshadow because it’s super versatile and the shade is absolutely gorgeous! The texture and formula of this shadow is awesome. You can use this as a highlight colour for your brow bones, cheek bones and your cupid’s arrow. As you can see, this is one of my most used eye shadows because it looks very natural on my skin and it looks pretty on my lids!

IMG_4705MAC Lipstick in Relentlessly Red

I bought this coraly pinky red matte lipstick colour on a whim and I’m so glad because I’m in love with this bold lip colour! The colour is pretty unique and it’s a matte lipstick, which is slowly becoming one of my favourite formulas I gravitate towards now. Everything about this lipstick is perfect, from the colour to the longevity on my lips!

IMG_4709MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in High Energy

Wearing lip liners on its own is slowly starting to become one of my favourite things to do. This particular lip liner is one of the creamiest liners I have ever used. Since it’s matte and pro longwear, I was surprised to see that my lips didn’t dry out at all. I love the colour. It’s a beautiful orangey bright poppy red, which is a perfect colour for a bold lip look!

IMG_4716MAC Nail Polish in Spice

I have been obsessed with this nail polish for a while now. This has to be the perfect blush/nude coloured nail polish I have ever come across. It looks amazing with my skin tone and it literally goes with anything. The formula is creamy and opaque. You will most likely find this shade on my nails anytime you see me, since it’s my most used!

IMG_4710MAC Mineralize Concealer (NW 35)

I’ve tried my fair share of concealers and this has to be my favourite! I use it for my undereye circles, any discoloration and blemishes. The coverage of this formula is incredible and it’s not drying at all! I love the brush tip that comes with this liquid concealer but I use a concealer brush to blend out the formula. It’s not cakey and literally binds to your skin!

IMG_4719MAC Lip Liner in Spice

Best. Lip. Liner. Ever! Seriously, I cannot even stress how much I love this lip liner. I wear this alone, I pair it with other lipsticks and it looks great! Everything from the longevity of this product on your lips to the colour is perfect! If you are looking for the perfect nude lip liner, then this is definitely it!

IMG_4712MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo

I’m pretty sure everyone knows of this cult favourite lipstick! Ruby Woo has to be one of the best red matte lipsticks out there. I find that this shade works with pretty much every skin tone and it looks amazing on everyone! The formula of this product isn’t drying and the colour is incredibly opaque, which is why this is one of my favourite red lippies!

IMG_4704MAC Lip Glass in Pink Lemonade

I’m not a huge lip gloss girl, although I used to wear them a lot when I was younger; but this particular lip gloss is one gloss I reach for because it looks so pretty on my lips! It’s a coraly orange colour with shimmer so it’s perfect to wear on its own or layer on top of other lipsticks (which looks pretty great). I find that this is one lipgloss I use the most from my stash.

IMG_4708MAC Powder Blush in Blunt

This product is a new edition to my makeup drawer and all I can say is that it is quickly becoming one of my most used products! This powder blush is mainly used as a contouring powder. The reason why I love this is because you can control the colour to contour your face really well. One swipe of this shade gives you a natural looking contour, but you can also build it up for special occasions!

Review: Nars Bronzing Powder in Laguna

IMG_3791

Ah I’ve figured out the best way to cure the winter blues, just wear a little bit of bronzer and I guarantee that you will instantly feel like summer is just around the corner. Nars, as everyone knows, is one of the top leading high-end makeup brand out there. Everyone from celebrities to the average everyday person has heard or used this particular brand. It’s one of my favourites because I have rarely ever been disappointed by the quality of their products. So when I was reading about the Nars bronzer in Laguna, I had to see for myself what everyone was raving about! This bronzer in Laguna is a true brown-based bronzer with subtle gold shimmer so that you are left with healthy, glowing, tanned skin without making a trip to the tanning salon or the islands! Laguna is described as a diffused brown powder with golden shimmer. It’s meant to create an all-over warmth or contour for the face. It’s finely milled powders fills in lines and pores for smother, more even looking complexion. This shade is natural looking and perfect for all skin tones.

My Verdict?

IMG_3793

I’ve been using this bronzer for a couple of years now and I can say that I am very impressed with what this bronzer has to offer. Now this product does say that it can be used as a contour, but for me that wasn’t the case because the colour is fairly light for my skin tone. But as a bronzer, I love this product! Every claim it makes is true. Firstly, the colour pay off as a bronzer is great! It’s got a slight golden kissed shimmer, which is perfect for a bronzer. After applying this on my cheeks and temples, my face really did have that perfect natural/healthy sun-kissed glow without really being sun-kissed (ha! The art of makeup). Secondly, the formula and texture of this product is incredible. It’s smooth to touch and not powdery at all. It glides perfectly on to your skin without drying it out. The finish of the product is a sheeny/satiny finish. Lastly, longevity wise, this product lasted on my skin and didn’t budge until I used a makeup remover to remove it. So all in all, this is a really good  quality bronzer for those who want a natural subtle glow. With that being said there are a few negatives. The price is incredibly high. At a whopping $62 (CDN), it really will be an investment for some. For me, it wasn’t a huge deal because of the size of the product. You really are getting a huge amount (I’ve used this a lot and barely hit the pan). Also, the packaging is good, you get a pretty big mirror attached to the bronzer! The other issue is that this particular bronzer might be too light for darker skin tones, which is why I wasn’t able to use it as a contour. But again, if it’s only a bronzer you want, then this is a phenomenal product. But I do believe that fairer skin tones will benefit more from this shade and will be able to use it as a contour. You can purchase this at any Nars counters (I got mine at Sephora).

Happy Shopping Dolls! x

Pros:

  • Gives you a natural, healthy, sun-kissed glow
  • Not glittery, but slightly shimmery without going overboard
  • Colour pay off is decent
  • Smooth and soft texture/formula
  • Quality bronzer
  • Packaging includes a mirror

Cons:

  • Price
  • Not a versatile product for darker skin tones
  • Can’t be used as a contour for darker skin tones

Rating: 8/10 (This really is a great product for anyone who wants that “I just came back from the Bahamas” look. I had to deduct two points for the price as well as because I wasn’t able to use this as a contour)
